Organisers of the 2021 ICF canoe ocean racing world championship are very confident the event will be a huge success. It will take place in Lanzarote, Spain, in a safe environment for teams and audiences from all over the world.
The event will take place from the 4th to the 6th of July and it will welcome international ocean racing. These are great news for the paddling community after more than 12 months without this competition due to the COVID pandemic. In addition, the 2021 ICF Masters canoe ocean racing world championships will be contested.

The South African team will contest in the world championship. They have the lead of multiple canoe marathon world title holders: Hank McGregor, 2019 silver medallist Kenny Rice and two-time silver medallist Michelle Burn.
Mr Riolobos, the event’s executive director, is sure the event will be a success. Organisers have experience in hosting the past four Atlantic Ocean ocean surfski races. This provides a solid foundation for this world championship.
“We will provide the best and safest conditions for the development of this World Championship,” Mr. Riolobos said. “We do not stop believing and still working with tenacity so we can deliver the opportunity to all of you willing to compete this 2021 during these extraordinary times.”
Moreover, Lanzarote has already held the Lanzarote International Regatta by the International Sailing Federation. This was a pre-Olympic continental qualifier for the FX, Nacra17 and 49er classes. This proves the island is more than ready for nautical competitions and ensures tested protocols to safeguard crews and teams.
The island is also hosting the Ironman Lanzarote and is home to more regattas. Event preparations for the ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championship have been strengthened by the support of boat logistics and rental companies. A partnership with a travel agency will provide guarantees for participants who are unable to attend the world championships.
Organisers of the event have already been working hard with the ICF to develop safe COVID protocols. Lanzarote and the Canary Islands in general have a very low infection rate. Strict measures have been in place here to prevent the spread of the virus. This allows athletes to enter a safe zone and experience canoe racing at the top level.
The 2019 ICF world championships were held in Saint Pierre Quiberon, France. Last year, the championship was cancelled due to COVID. We are hoping now to see the best nautical action in Lanzarote this summer.
