La Vaca Gigante 2026 is already underway and Santander is once again on the world map for big wave surfing. The international XXL paddle surfing championship is now in its 12th year with a historic change: for the first time, the waiting period has been extended to a full calendar year, from January to December, to ensure that the event only takes place when the sea offers the most extreme conditions.

This decision reinforces the philosophy that has defined the event since its inception: to compete only when the ocean reaches its maximum potential, consolidating La Vaca Gigante as one of the most demanding and respected events on the international big wave surfing circuit. With this extension, the championship can be activated any day of the year, provided that the necessary conditions are met: waves over 6 metres high and a setting that ensures both spectacle and the safety of surfers and the public. Once the optimal window has been detected, the organisation will make the official announcement 48 hours in advance, maintaining the excitement that has made this event a benchmark for extreme surfing.

“La Vaca Gigante is only celebrated when the sea reaches its maximum potential.”

The organisers of La Vaca Gigante 2026, led by Club ObsessionA2 and presented by Obsession Surf Santander, have confirmed that this new format will allow them to choose the most challenging day possible, optimise the logistics of the event and preserve the essence of the championship intact.

When and where it will be held

The championship takes place in front of the cliffs of La Cantera, in Cueto (Santander), overlooking Punta Vergajo and the Malasmañas shallows, a unique natural enclave where waves can reach between 7 and 9 metres, and even exceed these figures in the most powerful sets. This setting requires very specific sea, wind and tide conditions, which justifies a long and flexible waiting period.

The extension of the calendar also allows for the optimisation of the event's logistics and guarantees the safety of surfers and spectators, who gather on the cliffs to enjoy one of the greatest big wave surfing spectacles in Europe.

An international XXL paddle surfing championship

La Vaca Gigante 2026 is part of the international Big Wave Alliance circuit, which brings together big wave surfing competitions on different continents and is twinned with El Buey Santos del Mar (Chile), reinforcing its global reach. At the official presentation of this edition, the participation of surfers from Europe, South America and Indonesia was confirmed, consolidating the international character of the championship. In its last edition, the event brought together some 10,000 people in person and reached millions of viewers through broadcasts and digital platforms, confirming its relevance in big wave surfing worldwide.Pedro García and the consolidation of La Vaca Gigante

The organiser of the championship, Pedro García, highlighted the event's progress after twelve editions, emphasising the institutional, social and human support that La Vaca Gigante enjoys.

‘We are very happy to be able to announce this 12th edition, thanks to the commitment of the administration, the public, the suppliers, the volunteers and all the people who make it possible for La Vaca Gigante to continue in Cantabria’.

García also highlighted the event's ability to bring together the international surfing community around a unique wave, connecting surfers from different continents across the sea.

Tourism and institutional impact in Cantabria

The official presentation of La Vaca Gigante 2026 took place at the Hotel Real in Santander, with broad institutional representation from the Government of Cantabria and Santander City Council. The authorities highlighted the social, environmental and tourism significance of the event, noting that it has become a powerful tool for promoting sustainable and deseasonalised tourism.

One of the most unique aspects of the championship is that it is one of the few sporting events held within a UNESCO Global Geopark, Costa Quebrada, showcasing the natural environment of Cantabria on an international level.

Commitment to sustainability, educational values and social responsibility

Sustainability is once again a fundamental pillar of the championship. This year's edition will continue with initiatives such as ‘La Vaca Cero Plástico’ (Zero Plastic Cow), which aims to eliminate the use of single-use plastics during the competition. In addition, environmental awareness actions will be developed in collaboration with the public company MARE, including selective waste collection and educational activities. The event will also be certified for emissions offsetting, reaffirming its commitment to the environment. Beyond sport, this championship reinforces its educational and social dimension. La Vaca Gigante promotes values such as effort, personal improvement, teamwork and respect for nature, aligning itself with health and sports promotion programmes.

In terms of solidarity, the event collaborates with Mi Grano de Arena, promoting charitable sporting challenges alongside surfers and championship ambassadors, connecting XXL surfing with social causes that have a real impact.

La Vaca Gigante is not just a giant wave surfing championship, but an event that combines extreme sport, sustainability, international exposure and respect for the natural environment. With its new annual waiting period, Santander is preparing to thrill once again when the sea decides to show its wildest side.

An unmissable event for lovers of XXL surfing and major nautical events.
