The communication group Squirrel Media, chaired by Pablo Pereiro Lage, has reached a collaboration agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery to offer news and highlights content from The Ocean Race to its viewers. Selected clips from theThe legendary regatta The Ocean Race, will be broadcast in two of its media: the thematic television channel specialized in water sports Nautical Channel, and the OTT Canal Deporte.
More than six months of competition, an epic human adventure and a milestone for the best sailors. The 2022-2023 edition of The Ocean Race, the longest and most challenging sporting event in the world, can be followed from Nautical Channel and Canal Deporte thanks to the fact that Warner Bros. Discovery, official partner and live global broadcaster of The Ocean Race, has given the green light for non-live broadcasts in both media of the Squirrel group.
The XIV edition of The Ocean Race departed on January 15 from Alicante towards Cape Verde. The third port of the IMOCA route, starting in Cape Town, South Africa (February 26), will continue to Itajaí (Brazil, April 23) in what will be the longest stage in the history of the regatta: a marathon of one month and 12,750 nautical miles of sea.
The sailors will then stop in Newport (United States, May 21), Aarus (Denmark, June 8), Kiel (crossing point in Germany, June 9), and The Hague (Netherlands, June 15) to finish in Genoa (Italy) on July 1, after six and a half months of competition.
Held since 1973, The Ocean Race is one of the three major world events in water sports, along with the Olympic Games and the America's Cup. It is considered the most difficult team challenge in sailing and exerts an almost mythical attraction on some of the best sailors in the world. In this edition, the race takes on purpose: the need to protect the oceans in crisis.
The legendary regatta's audience, which enjoys wide coverage across Europe on Eurosport, Warner Bros. Discovery’s premium sports brand, will add thousands of sailing sports enthusiasts thanks to the collaboration with Squirrel Media group's media outlets.
Nautical Channel, available in 50 countries and accessible from over 70 satellite, cable, OTT, and mobile TV platforms, continuously broadcasts programming entirely dedicated to navigation and its lifestyle, as well as travels, onboard adventures, and major competitions. In Spain, it can be found on channel 77 of the Movistar+ platform.
Meanwhile, the Canal Deporte platform is an interactive digital television specialized in minority and grassroots sports, as well as lower division football. Acquired last October by the group presided over by Pablo Pereiro Lage, canaldeporte.com is accessible online for free worldwide through its website, mobile devices, and SmartTVs.
In the current edition of the Ocean Race, five IMOCA teams - 11th Hour Racing (USA); Team Malizia (Germany); Guyot environnement - Team Europa (European Union); Biotherm (France) and Team Holcin - PRB (Switzerland) - are competing in the around-the-world race for The Ocean Race Trophy.
Another’s six VO65 teams are competing in three stages for a new trophy called The Ocean Race VO65 Sprint Cup: Mirpuri Foundation Racing Team (Portugal), Ambersail 2 (Lithuania), and Austrian Ocean Racing powered by Team Genova (Austria).
The other three teams in this championship have Spanish sailors: Simbad Quiroga is part of Team JAJO (Netherlands); Viva México (Mexico) has Roberto 'Chuny' and Carlos Bermúdez de Castro, as well as Jaime Arbones, in its ranks. The WindWhisper Racing Team (Poland) is skippered by Pablo Arrate, accompanied by crew members Willy Altadill and Antonio 'Ñeti' Cuervas-Mons.
